The real speed of the 5G Internet
Compared with fourth-generation mobile networks, 5G base stations promise a significant increase in connection speed - electronics manufacturers recently managed to achieve a "space" figure of 4.3 Gbit/s. But outside of the test lab, this figure is usually more modest. The leading telecom operators of South Korea spoke about the actual capabilities of the new equipment: however, even in a "reduced" form, they are impressive.
Statistics were collected from January to June 2020 by three telecommunications companies: SK Telecom, KT, and LG Uplus. The average download speed in the networks of these operators was 789, 652, and 528.6 Mbit/s, respectively. In South Korea, the NSA spectrum of 5G networks in the 3.5 GHz range is used, and by the end of 2020, providers intend to master the mmWave frequency band.
In crowded places, files were downloaded on average at a speed of about 654 Mbps with a download speed of 63 Mbps. The study was conducted in 11,000 locations across the country, including libraries, universities, parks, hospitals, terminals, subways, and exhibition centers during peak hours.
As of August 2020, the total coverage area provided by the three largest operators in South Korea in the country's capital is 425.5 square kilometers. The area of the entire city is estimated at 605.2 square kilometers. By 2026, the government plans to increase the bandwidth from 2640 MHz to 2680 MHz, providing subscribers with more stable connections.
