The new Mazda2 for Europe will be a redesigned Toyota Yaris hybrid
The next-generation compact hatchback Mazda2, which will be built on the basis of Toyota Yaris, will appear in 2022.
The next-generation compact Mazda2 hatchback, which will be released in 2022, will be a redesigned version of the Toyota Yaris hybrid modification. This is reported by the British publication Autocar, citing its own source.
The new product will be developed by the joint efforts of specialists from Mazda and Toyota, who have been working closely for the past five years. The hatchback will be a slightly upgraded version of the Yaris, equipped with the Toyota Hybrid System II (THS II) hybrid power unit.
It includes a 1.5-liter naturally aspirated three-cylinder petrol engine that works together with an electric motor. The total output of the units is 117 horsepower. This car is available with both front and all-wheel drive, implemented by an additional electric motor on the rear axle.
The new Mazda2 will hit the assembly line in 2022. The production of the model will be established at the Toyota plant in Valenciennes, France, where they now produce Yaris hatchbacks and Yaris Cross crossovers.
Mazda and Toyota started working closely together in 2015. The partnership involves the exchange of experience in the development of internal combustion engines and electric units, as well as joint work on infotainment systems and electronic "assistants".
