Starting a blog is a great idea not only for those who want to become an opinion leader, but also for those who want to promote their business or just become popular. It would seem like blogging is long overdue, but no. Today, it can be created on Instagram, Telegram, on a personal website and in other services where users are willing to go.

Where is the best place to blog, how to organize everything with your own hands and what platforms are there for all this - we'll tell you in today's guide.

Why blog

A blog can help you develop as a person, as well as "sell" yourself if you decide to start a business or you already have your own business, but offline. For example, you paint custom portraits and want to promote your services on the Internet. It is not necessary to "throw" ads on Bing and Google, you can start a personal blog where you will talk about the intricacies of drawing, your work, and so on.

You can do this with any business, and as a result, a good blog will give not only popularity, but also success in your favorite business. Plus, all of this can bring useful contacts and like-minded people who can help and give good advice in blogging.

It is not necessary that your blog is about business, because not everyone has their own business. In such cases, you can simply use the blog as a hobby or as an opportunity to switch to another activity. As a result, all this can develop into a more ambitious business. Who knows, maybe you have a talent for writing, but you don't know about it yet.

What to blog about

If you have a strong desire to write a blog, but you have absolutely no idea what it might be about, then here are some tips for finding a topic:

  • Set up a challenge. Having come up with a challenge or taking part in it, you get several advantages: a clear goal will discipline, it will be easier to come up with topics for posts, you will be able to maintain the interest of readers - people are always interested in what will happen next. For example, a challenge can be in such a format as "100 things I will do in a year" - not shaving a beard for six months, take part in the development of an application, and so on.
  • Create case studies and disassemble them in the blog. This approach is perfect for those who want to show their expertise. If you do not have bright working cases for your blog, you can come up with them yourself.
  • Describe life events in an online diary. A typical blog, when the author talks about his life. It can simply describe personal and professional events. The advantage of this approach is that you are not limited to one topic: you can do book reviews, write reviews of films, and much more. But there are also disadvantages: if you write about everything in a row, it is difficult to find your audience and understand it.
  • Comment on the latest news. Here we are talking more about the news that you are most interested in. For example, if you are fond of telephones, then you can create a daily heading "What's new" or any other, but it is better to alternate everything together. However, if you want to achieve explosive popularity, then it is easier to write about the news that “blew up” the Internet or is about to “blow up”.
  • Write reviews. Reviews are easy to come up with, but they take longer to test a product or read a book, take photos and describe your experiences. For example, you can write reviews on books, movies, or smartphones.

If you want to write about what you love, then do it. There is an audience for everything, and if it doesn't work out at the beginning, then try further - your blog will definitely hook someone.

How to start blogging

The main tip in blogging is to just start blogging. Below are some guidelines that will help you organize your blog and improve its quality.

Write down ideas

Get in the habit of writing down thoughts and observations so you don't lose out on interesting ideas. For recordings, you can use the applications  Evernote, Bear, etc.. It is convenient to add notes to them on the go.

Make a publication plan

The content plan helps to publish articles on a regular basis. Planning topics for future articles and working on them is convenient in Trello. You can also use regular sheets in Google Docs.

Analyze blog statistics

If you are blogging on your site, then install an analytics system on it: Google Analytics, Yandex.Metrica etc.. Statistics will show how traffic to your blog is growing, which articles bring more traffic and what keywords visitors use to find your blog.

Optimize articles for search engines

Again, advice for those who blog on the site: select search queries for articles in Google Search and write them in the title, subheadings, article text and ALT texts for pictures.

If you are working on a blog engine, then you can use SEO plugins - add-ons that do some of the work for you.

Respond to comments

Every blog has comments - both positive and negative. Try to answer the most interesting and even those that are not written on a positive note. This not only keeps the blog alive but also attracts new readers.

Update your blog regularly

Make small changes to keep your readers happy. These can be new headings and formats, updated design, etc. And another very important tip - watch how others are blogging, mark their "chips" and always improve your content.

This is where I finish the theoretical part, and then I'll show you the options where you can start a blog.

6 popular blogging platforms

In this section, I will go over the best platforms where you can start a blog. These will be both special services for creating websites and special social networks, where everything is ready - just register and start writing.

WordPress

WordPress

One of the best platforms for both beginners and professionals. It takes just a few steps to create and design a simple blog. The WordPress directory has a large number of easily customizable themes to suit all tastes. And if you know the basics of web programming, you can change the design and functionality of your blog with almost no restrictions.

Pros:

  • free registration and blog creation;
  • creating your own design;
  • you can make money on advertising;
  • variety of themes on the platform;
  • it is possible to import your materials from other platforms.

Minuses:

  • knowledge of the code is optional, but highly appreciated;
  • monetization is possible only when using Premium and Business tariffs;
  • there are very few free themes.

Joomla!

Joomla

Joomla! is another website building platform where you can host your blog. The system includes many extensions and functions, thanks to which the creation of a blog is reduced to a few clicks. For example, you can create a calendar that will mark the release plan of articles - a very handy feature that will certainly help in blogging. Also, using a special commenting system, you can get feedback from users. In general, this is analogous to WordPress, but with a slightly different approach.

Pros:

  • creating a blog is available to everyone;
  • it is possible to connect an RSS feed;
  • promoting your blog with infographics: you can create and share infographics by creating special links to copy it to other sites;
  • it is possible to earn money on advertising.

Minuses:

  • basic knowledge of web programming may be required;
  • the platform may seem daunting to a beginner.

Cost: Free

Telegram

Telegram

If earlier Telegram was a messenger for personal communication, now it is a full-fledged platform for blogging. The capabilities of the service are sufficient for publishing short notes, videos or images. If you are planning to write long articles, then you can use a separate text editor Telegraph, developed specifically for this messenger.

Telegram is one of the few social platforms on which content is distributed without the help of algorithms. In other words, the system will not decide which publications to show to subscribers and which not. All content is displayed in chronological order.

Pros:

  • the channel can be advertised through the exchange;
  • channel statistics are available: views, number of participants, engagement;
  • in the channel, you can add a bot that will conduct polls, add emoji to posts, publish posts on a timer and do much more;
  • there are third-party services for viewing channel statistics and ratings;
  • it is possible to publish articles through the Telegraph platform.

Minuses:

  • it is difficult to promote your channel without investment.

Cost: Free

Medium

Medium

Not such a popular platform in the CIS, but in the West it is in high demand among many users. Despite this, the service allows you to publish articles in many languages. I myself often sit on Medium, and there are quite a few good articles, so you can probably find yourself on Medium as well.

In general, the platform was created with an eye to long, high-quality texts. If desired, authors can open paid access to their publications for readers who have subscribed to a paid subscription.

Pros:

  • free registration and account management;
  • Medium's affiliate program gives authors the opportunity to capitalize on readers' reactions.

Minuses:

  • monetization is almost impossible, a blog is more for creativity;
  • through the Stripe system, which Medium uses in the affiliate program, you can transfer funds.

Cost: Free

LiveJournal

LiveJournal

Another site for blogging is LiveJournal. This platform is increasingly forgotten, but it is still highly popular in certain circles. The main advantage of LiveJournal for the author is in the social component. A blog created on the platform becomes part of a large community and is very well indexed by search engines, which allows you to perfectly promote your work.

Pros:

  • thanks to the signs of a social network, it is possible to add friends and create communities, search for users by interests - it is easy to draw attention to your account and get loyal blog readers;
  • fast indexing of new material by search engines: a fresh publication instantly appears in the field of view of search engines;
  • the service is free, but if you wish, it is possible to connect additional paid functions.

Minuses:

  • the page design can be changed only within the limited framework of the platform;
  • to store big data, you need to purchase a paid account;
  • the presence of advertisements that often do not correspond to the topic of the author's blog.

Cost: Free

Instagram

Instagram

The last service I'll talk about is Instagram. A truly rich blogging platform where you can not only find your audience, but also make good money with ad integrations. The blog is structured as follows - you register an account and add posts to it, which can include both ordinary pictures and video clips. Each post is limited to 10 photos or videos, and the text cannot exceed 2,200 characters. Despite such restrictions, growing your blog on Instagram is quite easy, as it has hashtags, as well as the ability to promote the post within the network.

Pros:

  • you can connect a business version with access to audience statistics and publications;
  • easy to promote content.

Minuses:

  • emphasis on visual content, you need to be able to take good pictures and edit photos;
  • to attract an audience, you will need to start promoting your account and be familiar with SMM.

Cost: Free

Conclusion

Blogging today is a great way to both make money and unwind, to take a break from your busy work week. Above, we examined how to work with all this and what services there are for this. If you are planning a large-scale blog, then it is best to use Instagram, since now everyone is sitting in it and actively "monitoring" popular bloggers.

But do not miss out on other platforms, for example, Telegram - it can also lead an audience and good earnings, if you try. In general, the choice is yours :)
