macOS Big Sur: lightweight design, fast browser and mobile widgets
At the WWDC 2020 developer conference, Apple presented not only the mobile OS but also the latest version of its proprietary desktop operating system. In addition to the updated interface, macOS Big Sur has acquired a number of other useful innovations designed to improve not only the usability but also the privacy of the owners of "Macs".
One of the key innovations that the new macOS Big Sur received was a "light" interface, much like the mobile iOS. For example, the desktop operating system has a recognizable menu "control point", which iPhone owners call swipe up from the bottom edge of the display. It allows you to quickly adjust the brightness, enable Do not disturb mode, and adjust the sound volume. The operating system also received support for screen widgets identical to the mobile versions for iOS.
The redesign also touched upon a number of proprietary applications, including the system Mail, Photos, Notes, and iWork. In addition, the program icons in the quick access panel have changed - now they also resemble iOS analogs. Another “mobile” feature of the new macOS was the quick response to messages.
A major update was also received by the Safari browser, which, among other things, has the ability to block trackers that use sites to collect information about users. Also, according to Apple, the app has become more economical to use battery life, and the stated speed of loading web pages of the new version is 50% higher than Google Chrome. There is also a built-in option to translate sites into seven languages with one click.
The updated Messages app has the ability to pin important chats on top of all open windows of other programs. Apple also added several useful features to the Maps app, such as the ability to view detailed interiors of major airports and shopping centers, and local maps of premises.
When downloading apps from the App Store, the user will immediately receive information about privacy - what data is collected, and whether it will be used for tracking in other apps and websites.
MacOS 11 Big Sur will be released in the fall of this year.
