ZTE Axon 20 5G becomes the first smartphone with a sub-screen camera

18 August 2020, Tuesday By Elena Arich

The era of smartphone cutouts is coming to an end. Chinese mobile device manufacturer ZTE is planning to launch a smartphone with an under-display selfie camera. The company claims the Axon 20 5G will be the first production smartphone to feature the long-awaited feature.

The company will present Axon 20 5G at a virtual event on September 1. ZTE says this "will be another milestone in the study of a true full-display smartphone."

This means that the smartphone will not have cutouts or holes, and the screen-to-body ratio should increase. ZTE says that "all the major players in the industry" were working on this technology, but it won the race.

"By launching the world's first 5G smartphone with a sub-screen camera, ZTE will further develop display technologies in the smartphone industry, thereby offering revolutionary opportunities for all consumers," the company said in a press release.

Companies like Oppo are known to be experimenting with this technology but have yet to release a consumer device to the market. There are rumors that Samsung will introduce this technology in its future smartphone.

Many companies have released smartphones with neat mechanical retractable selfie cameras to provide a frameless display, but the advantages of a sub-screen camera are obvious – with this approach, there will be no moving parts that are prone to breakage. ZTE did not explain how this feature will be implemented or whether there will be any compromises in image quality.

When Oppo debuted its version of USC technology a year ago, It described an "improved translucent panel" through which the camera can see without losing brightness or contrast. However, the technology has not yet been implemented in smartphones, so ZTE has every right to call itself a pioneer.

The company has not disclosed any additional information about the smartphone, but recent leaks say it will have a 6.92-inch smartphone with a 2460 x 1080 OLED display, as well as a 32-megapixel front camera and a 64-megapixel+8-megapixel rear camera.
