Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2: evolution of flexible display
During the Unpacked 2020 event, Samsung has updated its branded line of foldable smartphones, presenting a model called the Galaxy Z Fold 2. Despite the form factor similar to its predecessor, the device received a number of noticeable differences: changes affected the processor model, display diagonals, and camera configuration.
The new product inherited the foldable form factor from its predecessor, but at the same time received a number of constructive and design innovations. The most noticeable change is the external 6.23-inch AMOLED screen with a 60Hz refresh rate, which takes up almost the entire front panel area of the folded gadget. As before, it is a full-fledged workspace: you can use it to make calls, send messages, or run various software, including games.
The main flexible display has also added in size, the diagonal of which has increased to 7.6 inches when open, while the thickness of the frames has decreased compared to last year’s version. The flexible 120Hz panel also acquired a proprietary protective layer Ultra-Thin Glass, which increases its «survivability».
Thanks to the modified One UI firmware based on Android 10 in tablet mode, the user can run several applications at the same time or use the entire available area for one window. When bending the device, the picture will automatically move to the auxiliary screen and automatically scale to its size. Another difference between the Galaxy Z Fold 2 and last year's model was the absence of a characteristic cutout for a double front camera on the main display, which "eats" part of the usable area. Its place was taken by a neat hole into which a single 10-megapixel module is embedded - another one of the same is located on the external screen.
The main module is represented by three sensors with a resolution of 12 megapixels and different lenses. Unlike a selfie sensor, this unit is available in any position: both displays of the device can be used as a viewfinder. The hinge itself, like the previous model of the line, supports the Flex Mode function, which allows the display to be fixed when opened at an angle from 90° to 120°.
The hardware has undergone small but significant changes: under the "hood" is the flagship eight-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 865+ processor with an integrated Snapdragon X55 5G modem, with support for a maximum data transfer rate of up to 7.5 GB/s. It is NSA and SA compatible with Dynamic Frequency Sequencing (DSS) and supports global 5G roaming. In addition, the mobile platform includes a Spectra 480 image processor with a speed of up to 2 gigapixels per second. The Galaxy Z Fold 2 also features support for the Qualcomm FastConnect 6900 mobile communications system, which improves Wi-Fi and Bluetooth performance.
"The unwavering focus for Samsung Electronics is to create a first-class user experience on our mobile devices, and our partnership with Qualcomm Technologies fully supports this mission. The Snapdragon 865 Plus as part of our new products will provide users with the innovative mobile experience they are looking for," - said Inkang Song, vice president and head of technology strategy, IT and Mobile Communications, Samsung Electronics.
The amount of RAM and internal memory is 12 and 256 GB, respectively. A combo of two separate battery cells with a total capacity of 4500 mAh, separated by the "halves" of the case, is responsible for the autonomy of the bendable smartphone. The smartphone supports fast wired charging technology with a power of 25 W, wireless 15 W, and at the same time is able to perform the role of a power bank, charging various accessories and other gadgets.
