Gaming ASUS ROG Phone 3: Snapdragon 865+, 655K points in AnTuTu and 6000 mAh battery
ASUS has introduced the third generation of the ROG Phone gaming smartphone. The new product received the most powerful hardware to date, an improved cooling system, a display with a high refresh rate, loud stereo speakers, multi-functional touch triggers, and an impressive battery capacity.
ROG Phone 3 was among the first to receive the latest flagship Snapdragon 865 + chipset with a maximum clock speed of 3.1 GHz. In comparison with the usual Snapdragon 865, this chip is about 10% more powerful both in terms of CPU and GPU. The maximum amount of RAM in the configuration is 16 GB. This uses LPDDR5 memory, which is 51% faster than the LPDDR4x used in ROG Phone 2. Up to 512 GB of UFS 3.1 memory is available for storing applications and other content. According to ASUS, with such a filling, the smartphone scores 655,306 points in AnTuTu, as well as 1002 and 3473 points in the single-core and multi-core Geekbebch tests, respectively.
To achieve even greater performance in games, ASUS has improved its proprietary X Mode, which can be activated via the quick settings menu. It optimizes the use of system resources to ensure the smoothest possible gameplay with a stable Internet connection. Additionally, you can customize the X Mode settings for each specific game.
As with its predecessors, the ROG Phone 3 has an opening on the back cover for ventilation and cooling of internal components. According to the manufacturer, the size of the radiator in comparison with ROG Phone 2 was increased by 6 times. In addition, an evaporation chamber and graphite foil are provided inside the smartphone, which contributes to better heat dissipation. For more efficient cooling, the package includes a plug-in Airoactive Cooler 3.
A feature of the updated AeroActive Cooler 3 is a built-in leg that allows you to place your smartphone on a table to play with a gamepad or just watch a video. In addition, the cooler has a 3.5mm headphone jack (the ROG Phone 3 itself does not). The fan power is regulated in a special application.
Most of the front side is occupied by a 6.6-inch AMOLED display with a refresh rate of 144 Hz and a touch layer frequency of 270 Hz. The screen delay when touching is only 25 MS, and during swipes-18 MS, which is one of the best results among smartphones. Front-facing stereo speakers are positioned symmetrically at the top and bottom. ASUS claims that in comparison with its predecessor, they sound noticeably better, more voluminous, cleaner, and the bass has become more powerful. When you start games, a special game mode is automatically activated, which optimizes the sound accordingly.
Like its predecessor, the ROG Phone 3 has a large 6,000mAh battery with support for 30W fast charging. The manufacturer claims that through optimization it was possible to reduce battery degradation. It is stated that in comparison with the OnePlus 8 Pro, it will last 1.3 times longer: in 25 months, the ROG Phone 3 battery wears out as much as the OnePlus 8 Pro battery degrades in 18 months. According to ASUS, the new product allows you to play continuously in PUBG Mobile for 9.2 hours, in Asphalt 9 - 9.6 hours, in Call of Duty Mobile - 9.3 hours.
Fast charging allows you to recharge 4510 mAh in 45 minutes. At the same time, the charging process is configured in a special PowerMaster app. For example, you can limit the speed to reduce battery degradation or set the maximum charge level: 80%, 90%, or 100%. In addition, ROG Phone 3 allows you to customize the power saving mode for yourself, and applications can be immersed in a state of hibernation, in which energy consumption is reduced by 67%.
The main camera in the smartphone is triple - with the main Sony IMX686 sensor at 64 megapixels with a pixel size of 1.6 microns and a lens with an aperture of f/1.8. Additionally, a 13-megapixel ultra-wide-angle camera and a macro camera are provided. The front camera resolution is 24 megapixels.
The smartphone received improved AirTrigger 3 touch triggers that combine ultrasonic sensors and motion sensors. Thanks to this, they respond not only to touch but also to slides (you can look around in games, turn the camera), swipes. You can use these triggers to simulate 2 buttons on each side. It is also possible to hold them for constant shooting in games.
Other features of ROG Phone 3 include HyperFusion Network technology, which increases the strength, stability, and speed of the Internet connection. There are four microphones located throughout the smartphone body that provides high-quality voice sound when communicating in a chat. There are two charging connectors: on the bottom and on the side. Both are positioned so that the cable does not interfere with holding the device in a horizontal position. There is a ROG logo on the back with a customizable Aura RGB backlight, which can be disabled if desired.
A set of additional accessories has been developed for ROG Phone 3. Among them - a protective case with a glowing logo, a TwinView Dock 3 with a second screen with a refresh rate of 144 Hz, which serves to display various useful information in games, a ROG Kunai 3 gamepad that can be connected to a mobile device or used separately, a ROG Clip for attaching a smartphone to popular gamepads of other brands. At the same time, the new ROG Phone 3 is compatible with most accessories from ROG Phone 2.
The cost of ASUS ROG Phone 3 for 12/512 GB is 999 euros. The 16/512 GB version will cost 1099 euros. ASUS ROG Phone 3 Strix Edition with 8 GB of RAM and 256 GB of internal memory will go on sale at a price of 799 euros.
