Samsung 980 PRO SSD for gamers and professionals
Samsung has announced the start of sales of the consumer NVMe SSD 980 Pro with PCIe 4.0 interface. The new product, according to the vendor, is able to provide record performance for its class and will be presented in several configurations with up to 2 TB of memory.
The new drive has been designed to deliver maximum performance for PCs, workstations, and game consoles. Samsung 980 Pro is positioned as a turnkey solution for users who work with content in 4K or 8K resolution or run hardware-intensive games. Thanks to the support of the PCI-Express 4.0 interface, the new product is able to provide sequential read and write speeds of up to 7000 MB/s and 5000 MB/s, respectively, and random speed up to 1000K IOPS: twice as fast as using PCIe 3.0, and up to 12.7 times faster compared to SATA solutions.
The role of a heatsink for dissipating heat in the design of the SSD is performed by a nickel plating applied directly to the controller, as well as a heat-distributing sticker located on the back of the device. Samsung engineers have taken care of integrating Samsung's Dynamic Thermal Guard technology, which helps to keep the drive temperature at an optimal level, minimizing performance fluctuations during extended operation.
The Samsung SSD 980 PRO comes in 1TB, 500GB, and 250GB models, and will be available worldwide starting this month, while the 2TB capacity model will be available by the end of this year. The 980 PRO’s manufacturer’s suggested retail prices start at $89.99 for the 250GB model.
