Qualcomm announced its flagship Snapdragon 888 platform
As part of the first day of the annual Tech Summit Digital conference, Qualcomm announced a new flagship mobile platform, unexpectedly named Snapdragon 888. In addition, there were other surprise announcements at the event.
So far, Qualcomm has not disclosed detailed technical specifications of the Snapdragon 888, limiting itself to the key features of the new chipset. The company focused primarily on fifth-generation networks, artificial intelligence technologies, and mobile gaming.
Devices based on the Snapdragon 888 will receive the third generation of the Snapdragon X60 5G Modem-RF system, made using a 5-nm process. It supports frequency aggregation across all key 5G bands and their combinations, including mmWave and sub-6, ensuring global compatibility with fifth-generation networks. The new modem supports download speeds of up to 7.5 Gbit/s and upload speeds of up to 3 Gbit/s.
The Snapdragon 888 includes a completely redesigned Qualcomm Hexagon processor with support for the third-generation AI Engine, which, in comparison with the company's previous solutions, provides a dramatic leap in performance and energy efficiency when solving artificial intelligence tasks, producing an impressive 26 Tera operations per second.
Together with the new mobile platform, Qualcomm is introducing the third generation of its proprietary Snapdragon Elite Gaming technology, providing increased performance for Adreno GPUs. In addition, the company claims that Snapdragon 888 turns smartphones into professional cameras. The new spectra ISP image processor is capable of taking photos and videos at 2.7 gigapixels per second, or approximately 120 photos with a resolution of 12 MP per second, up to 35% faster than the previous generation.
To demonstrate the capabilities of the new chipset, Qualcomm built a radio-controlled race car based on the Snapdragon 888, connected to the fifth-generation networks in the millimeter range. The operator controlled it remotely, being at a distance of almost 2 kilometers, and followed the route in real-time thanks to the video broadcast with minimal delay.
The head of Xiaomi has officially announced a new flagship smartphone Mi11:
Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 will appear in ASUS, Black Shark, Lenovo, LG, Meizu, Motorola, Nubia, realme, OnePlus, OPPO, Sharp, Vivo, Xiaomi, and ZTE devices.
Qualcomm will reveal all technical details about new products during the second day of the annual Tech Summit Digital conference.
