How To Make Money On Your Website

Website monetization - everyone who has a website thinks about it. And those who do not have websites often think about creating one precisely in order to expand their business and earn an extra penny. Or, maybe, make this earnings your main one. After all, everyone is attracted by this idea - there is a website, money goes, but nothing needs to be done. In practice, it turns out a little differently, because in order for the site to begin to bring at least some money, you need to invest a lot of time and effort into it (and often also your own money). But who does not risk, he does not drink champagne? Therefore, in this article I want to talk about what ways there are now to make money on your own website, and what is required to master them.

monetize a site

1. Online Store

This is the most common and understandable way. This is not really monetization, since you get money not because of the site itself, but because of the transactions that are made on it. You can sell services, you can sell goods. Products can be either physical: clothing, equipment, etc., or virtual: video tutorials, books, photographs, etc.

This is one of the most profitable and most costly ways to make money on all fronts, since you will have to spend money on purchases, on delivery, on documentation, on site content, on advertising, finally.

You will most likely start receiving money immediately after launching an online store, but it will take a lot of time to prepare it, and then to payback, so this is initially a way for those who are ready to: a) make investments; b) wait a month, half a year, or a year before making a profit, when the income will cover expenses.

By the way, more and more often, landing pages (one-page pages) act as an online store - sites on the main and only page of which one or more products are sold. The launch of such a project takes a minimum of investment and time, and the exhaust can be large - provided the time and popularity of the product is correct: before the New Year holidays, artificial trees are being sold, before the holiday season - monopods, etc.

In order not to write separately, I will immediately mention here the exchanges where the site receives a commission, a percentage of sales for being an intermediary between people who sell their services or goods. This applies to sites with orders for freelancers, shopping sites where different people sell goods (for example, Ebay), payment systems, etc. File hosting services are arranged in a similar way, which for money make it possible to download a file.

2. Advertising

Advertising is one of the main methods of making a profit from a website. But advertising is different from advertising, so I want to separately dwell on each of the possible methods of monetizing a site through advertising.

Banners

Banner advertising is one of the most common and convenient; the amount of profit depends almost directly on how popular your site is (but the banner theme is also important). You place an advertiser's banner on your site, and he pays you for the number of impressions or clicks. Nowadays, there are more and more animated banners, but there is also just an advertisement in the form of a static graphic image. You need to be careful with banner ads - it is clear that everyone wants to get as much profit as possible, but if you overwhelm your site with it, it can negatively affect the design of your site and the loyalty of your readers in general.

You can find an advertiser both directly - by writing that you are selling advertising space on your website (in this case, you directly choose those who will be displayed on your website) - and on special services that offer website owners to make money on banners through their system.

In this case, banners can be hung not only on the main page of the site, but also on separate pages with articles, photographs, etc. - especially if it is often visited by users from search engines.

Contextual advertising

Banners are slowly becoming a thing of the past, and contextual advertising comes to the fore. Are there still people who have not heard of her? I doubt it, but just in case I’ll explain: the site owner places on his resource a block of contextual advertising from one of the contextual advertising services, and then makes a profit for every click that a site visitor made on this block. The cost of this click is determined individually and primarily depends on the site traffic. Another distinguishing feature of contextual advertising is its relevance for the user - he will see what he is interested in (based on requests), even if the advertisement is not in any way related to the topic of your site.

Contextual advertising is convenient, since you do not have to select partners yourself, place and replace their advertising messages, and so on. Examples of services are known:

Direct advertising

A pretty good way to monetize is to advertise products or services directly, for example, in an article. Usually this type is suitable for frequently updated sites (blogs, news portals, etc.). The bottom line is clear: an advertiser contacts you, he orders and pays, for example, an article (or gives you a ready-made material for publication), you just have to place an advertisement on your website. At the same time, of course, such materials are paid much higher than clicks on banners or transitions. However, the stability in the emergence of new advertisers lies entirely with you and your activity - either you have such a wonderful site that advertisers themselves line up on it, or you yourself are actively telling advertisers about the advantages of your site. Otherwise, it is easier to place contextual advertising and - how much you earned.

A variation of this type of advertising can also be called sponsorship, when you devote not the whole material to the advertiser, but only a small mention at the beginning or at the end of the text. This is convenient both for the site owner (since sponsorship can be issued for several materials at once - more income), and for the advertiser (since it is cheaper than ordering a separate material).

But do not forget that if there are only advertising materials on the site, then soon it will become uninteresting to your site visitors.

3. Paid services

This is a somewhat specific type of advertising, as it is most common on sites with a large number of registered users - dating sites, ad exchanges, etc. For example, a user's profile or ad is placed free of charge, but the user must pay to raise it to the first place (highlight with color, add to a special catalog, etc.). On social networks, this is sending virtual gifts, buying stickers, etc. This is a very effective way to make money on your own website, provided that you have an impressive user base.

Also, I want to include paid content in this section, when, by subscribing to a paid subscription, the reader can access other articles, more photos, etc. Some site owners go further and start hosting paid seminars, webinars, etc. But here you need to understand that advertisers do not like to work with paid sites, since usually such sites have a more limited audience.

4. Affiliate programs

Affiliate programs are a large layer with which you can easily make money on your website. In fact, this is something between contextual advertising and direct advertising with the difference that you are primarily interested in selling, because only in this case you get your percentage.

The affiliate program does not imply any strict advertising methods - you can send links with a referral code to your friends, tell your friends, etc. You can engage in affiliate programs without your own website (for example, campaigning for a purchase on a social network), however, a website is a more reliable and comprehensive way of constantly earning income from an affiliate program.

How to choose an affiliate program? It is better to choose something as close as possible to the target audience of your site - it will definitely be interesting to your site visitors. An even better option is to advertise what you specifically like (for example, advertise a store where you yourself often shop). Now every more or less large site (business) has its own affiliate program - I don’t want to choose. Be sure to pay attention to the conditions: the percentage you receive, the amount and possibilities of withdrawal, etc.

5. Product placement

It is still a new, but already proven method of advertising. This is when you go to a site, and instead of wallpaper, it has an advertising poster for a movie, TV series, medicine, etc. Often found on news sites, etc.

It should be borne in mind that, firstly, the site must be sufficiently known and visited so that one of the major advertisers wants to be placed on it. Secondly, this advertiser will at the same time become a part of your site, and therefore of your image, so you need to choose wisely.

6. Selling links

I would say that this method of monetization is somewhere on the verge of acceptable (and maybe beyond), since, firstly, this is one of the methods of black SEO (optimization through dishonest methods), and secondly, it can turn your site into a dump.

What is link selling? The fact is that there is a so-called link weight, which directly affects the promotion of a site in search engines. The pattern is simple: the more other sites link (= have links) to a particular site, the more reliable and trustworthy it is considered. Therefore, when SEO specialists want to quickly push a new site to the top, they go to exchanges and buy links for their site there. Accordingly, you can earn by posting these links on your site.

Now, with this kind of optimization, things have become a little more complicated - for example, an abundance of links to third-party resources on your site can be equated by search engines with search spam, and the bad reputation of the site you link to can negatively affect your site. In other words, as in the case of excessive advertising, selling links can reduce the popularity of your site, lowering its place in the search engine rankings, which means that traffic will also drop.

7. Donations

If you are against advertising on your site, but want to receive material "thanks" from readers, then give them the opportunity to donate, transfer a certain amount to your account. On the one hand, this is not an advertisement, and certainly not a sale; on the other hand, having such an opportunity and regular visitors, you will consistently receive a certain amount per month.

What should you choose?

The choice of the most effective way to monetize a site directly depends on the subject matter, site traffic and your personal preferences. Experiment with several strategies to see which one works best. That being said, keep in mind that no one likes excessive amounts of ads, so by filling your site with ads from head to toe, you could lose a lot of audience and traffic. The optimal strategy when choosing monetization is to combine the interests of your resource with respect to visitors and measure in the amount of advertising. And since the more popular a site is, the more interesting it is for advertising, first of all, you should always think about promoting your site, attracting new traffic, etc.
